By the time you hit the third paragraph you have already started scrolling toward the end to check if there is anything worth stopping for.

That is AI slop. And you felt it before you could name it.

Now think about a different experience. You are reading something else. Maybe it is a newsletter. Maybe it is a blog post from someone whose work you follow. The first sentence catches you off guard because it says something specific. Not 'content marketing is important' but 'the last three pieces we published got zero shares and I spent a weekend figuring out why.' You lean forward slightly. This person knows something. They were actually there. You finish the piece and close the tab thinking something you did not think before you opened it.

That gap between those two experiences is real. It is not subjective. It is not a matter of taste. It is the difference between prose generated to approximate writing and writing produced to communicate something. The first is hollow by design. The second has weight because it came from somewhere.

The problem is that right now, most of the internet is filling up with the first kind. And most attempts to fix it are producing a third category: content that is slightly less hollow than AI slop, but still not genuinely good. Content that passed a detector but failed the reader. What Actually Makes Something AI Slop

The word 'slop' is blunt but accurate. It describes output that was produced efficiently but without care. Technically edible but nobody wants to eat it. Let's get specific about what makes AI-generated content fall into this category, because understanding the mechanics is the first step toward fixing it.

The Technical Side: Perplexity and Burstiness

Language models generate text by predicting the most statistically likely next token given what came before. This means they default toward what is average. Not wrong, not surprising, not bold. Average. Researchers measure this in terms of perplexity, which is essentially how surprising the text is to a model trained on human writing. AI-generated text has low perplexity because it gravitates toward the expected.

Burstiness is the other signal. Human writers write in uneven rhythms. Short sentences. Then a longer one that builds on the idea and carries it somewhere specific. Then maybe two short ones again. The rhythm changes because the thought changes, because the writer is actually working through an idea in real time. AI output has uniform burstiness: sentences cluster in similar lengths, structured in similar ways, with similar connective tissue between them. It feels smooth in a way that real writing is not. That smoothness is actually the problem.

The 'Sounds Right But Says Nothing' Quality

This is the core failure of AI slop. Each sentence, in isolation, makes sense. Each paragraph, in isolation, seems fine. But put them together and trace what is actually being communicated and you find almost nothing. The sentences validate the general topic. They affirm that the topic is important. They state that there are challenges and opportunities. But they never commit to a specific position on any of it.

This happens because language models are trained to produce plausible continuations, not correct or original arguments. A model asked to write about content marketing will produce text that sounds like what content marketing articles sound like, which means it produces the average of all content marketing articles. The average of all opinions is no opinion. The average of all observations is no observation.

Hollow Action Verbs and Floating Qualifiers

Read any piece of AI slop carefully and you will notice certain verbs doing no work. 'Enables.' 'Allows.' 'Supports.' 'Facilitates.' These verbs describe a relationship without naming it. 'This tool enables you to improve your workflow' says nothing that could be checked or challenged. Compare it to 'This tool cuts the time you spend formatting reports by half because it learns your template on the first use.' The second sentence can be true or false. The first sentence cannot be false because it commits to nothing.

Qualifiers do the same job. 'Relatively,' 'somewhat,' 'often,' 'typically,' 'in many cases.' These words exist to protect the sentence from being wrong by removing its ability to be right. Human writers use qualifiers too, but selectively, when they are genuinely uncertain. AI output uses them everywhere because certainty is statistically riskier than hedge.

The Three-Point Structure Addiction

Ask a language model to write about almost any topic and it will produce three things. Three reasons, three benefits, three challenges, three steps. The number three is statistically dominant in human instructional writing, so models learned it. But the structure became a crutch. Real thinking does not always produce three points. Sometimes it produces one point that actually matters and a lot of noise. Sometimes it produces seven. The artificial three-point packaging is a signal that the structure came before the content.

No Personal Experience, No Opinion, No Original Observation

This is where AI slop fails most completely. Genuine writing carries evidence of the writer. Not necessarily autobiographical detail, but the trace of a mind that actually processed the topic and formed a view. When a human writer says 'the common advice here is wrong, and here is why,' they are doing something a language model cannot do: taking a position that risks being unpopular. When they reference a specific experience that shaped their view, they are grounding the argument in something that cannot be fabricated.

AI slop has no such grounding. It cannot have it. The model was not there. It has no stake in the argument being right. So it produces the shape of an argument without the substance, which readers feel even when they cannot articulate what is missing.

The 'Reading Without Learning Anything' Experience

The clearest test for AI slop is simple: after you read it, did you know something you did not know before? Did your view of the topic shift even slightly? Did you encounter a framing you had not considered? If the answer is no across the board, you read slop. Good content changes what you know or what you think. Slop confirms what you already knew using sentences you already expected.

When most people think about AI humanization, they think about detection scores. You paste text, it scores 89% AI, you run it through a humanizer, it comes out 23% AI, you publish it. Problem solved. Except this is exactly the wrong way to think about it.

Detection tools measure signals like perplexity and burstiness. Humanization tools that are only targeting detection scores will manipulate those signals without fixing the underlying problems. They will vary sentence length artificially. They will swap vocabulary. They will introduce minor grammatical quirks. The content will score better on a detector. But the hollow core is still hollow. The reader will still feel nothing.

This is the fundamental failure of lazy humanization. It treats a symptom while the disease progresses. You have content that will not get flagged by an automated tool and will still immediately repel a human reader who could not name what bothered them but closed the tab anyway.

What Lazy Humanization Produces: The Uncanny Valley

There is a psychological phenomenon called the uncanny valley. It describes the discomfort people feel when something looks almost human but not quite. A robot with near-human facial expressions. A CGI character who is realistic but slightly wrong. The closer to human, the more disturbing the gap.

Poorly humanized content occupies this valley. It is not obviously AI slop, so readers do not dismiss it outright. But it is not genuinely human, so they feel a low-level unease they cannot place. It means creating moments of rhythm variation that come from actual thought, not algorithmic sentence-length adjustment.

Good humanization is closer to rewriting with AI as a first draft than to running text through a spinner. The AI does the scaffolding. The human does the substance. The final output has the efficiency of AI-assisted drafting and the credibility of genuine human judgment.

The Structural Changes That Actually Matter

Count what this paragraph actually says. Content marketing is important. You should understand it. This guide will cover it. That is the entire information payload of 96 words. The reader learned nothing they did not already know and gained no reason to keep reading beyond a vague promise that the rest of the guide will be more useful than the introduction was.

Also notice: 'digital landscape,' 'increasingly crowded online environment,' 'meaningful ways,' 'actionable insights,' 'comprehensive guide.' These phrases are filler. They mean nothing specific. They are the verbal equivalent of lorem ipsum, except they fool people into thinking content has been written.

The Poorly Humanized Version

Content marketing is one of the most powerful tools available to businesses today. With so much competition online, knowing how to create content that actually resonates with your audience is a skill that can set you apart from the crowd. This is slightly better on a detection score. The contractions help. 'That's where this guide comes in' sounds more conversational. But the information content is identical to the first version. We still learned nothing. There is still no specific claim, no real opinion, no reason this is the guide to read over the other thousand guides about content marketing. The hollow core survived the humanization pass completely intact.

The Well-Humanized Version

The last three content pieces we published got a combined total of six shares. I spent a Saturday going back through the data trying to figure out what went wrong. The answer was not what I expected. It was not the topics. It was not the headlines. It was that every single piece started with a sentence that assumed the reader already cared, instead of giving them a reason to. I changed one thing in the next piece: the opening three sentences. It got 340 shares in 48 hours. This guide is about that one thing, applied across every part of your content strategy.

Notice what changed. There is a specific situation: three pieces, six shares, a Saturday, data. There is an unexpected finding: not the topic, not the headline. There is a specific action: three sentences changed. There is a specific result: 340 shares in 48 hours. And there is a direct promise about what the rest of the piece will do. The reader now has a reason to continue that did not exist before: they want to know what the three sentences were.

The good version works because it contains information that can only exist if someone was actually there. The numbers are specific. The timeline is real. The discovery is unexpected. You cannot generate this paragraph from a language model because a language model was not there. That is the signal readers are looking for.

Every adjective in this paragraph is what is called a 'claim adjective.' It asserts quality without demonstrating it. 'Robust,' 'comprehensive,' 'seamless,' 'intuitive,' 'powerful.' These words could describe any product or none. They are not false but they are not evidence. A customer reading this learns nothing about what the product actually does differently from the thirty other project management tools they have already evaluated.

Also notice the complete absence of a customer. There is no scenario. There is no person with a specific problem who uses this product and has a specific experience. The product description exists in a vacuum, talking about itself in abstract terms.

The Poorly Humanized Version

The tone shifted. The contractions are there. The sentences are shorter. It sounds more like a person talking. But 'the tools you need to keep everything on track' is just as content-free as 'robust features.' The claim about getting started in minutes and seeing results right away is the kind of unverifiable assertion that makes people more skeptical, not less. The uncanny valley is exactly here: it sounds human but says nothing a human with actual experience would say.

The Well-Humanized Version

Before switching to this platform, our head of operations spent 40 minutes every Monday morning pulling status updates from Slack, email threads, and a shared spreadsheet that was always three days out of date. Now that same Monday briefing takes eight minutes because every task update from the previous week is already compiled in one view. The platform syncs with GitHub and Jira automatically, so engineering updates land in the project view without anyone having to remember to copy them over. This paragraph could have been written by anyone applying for any marketing manager role at any company in any industry. 'Excited to apply.' 'Passionate about marketing.' 'Customer-centric approaches.' 'Strong skills in campaign management.' 'Excellent fit.' These are the five most common phrases in cover letter AI slop. The recruiter reads them and their brain registers: this person used a template. No information about this person as a specific human has been communicated.

The Poorly Humanized Version

When I came across the Marketing Manager opening at Brightfield, I knew right away it was the kind of role I'd been looking for. I have spent the past five years working in marketing, building campaigns from scratch and leading small teams to hit some pretty ambitious goals. The tone is warmer. 'Pretty ambitious goals' sounds like a person talking. But 'knew right away it was the kind of role I'd been looking for' — why? What kind of role? What specific thing about Brightfield created that recognition? The 'connecting with customers in authentic ways' and 'something your company shares' are vague to the point of being meaningless. This is the uncanny valley version of a good cover letter: it sounds like someone talking but it still says nothing specific about who that person is or why they want this job in particular.

The Well-Humanized Version

Last quarter I ran a campaign for our B2B SaaS client that most of the team thought would flop. The brief called for a LinkedIn series targeting CFOs, which is not exactly known as a format that generates leads. I pushed for it anyway, restructured the content around actual CFO language pulled from earnings calls, and by week six the campaign had generated 23 qualified leads from Fortune 500 companies — the most of any campaign we ran that year. I read your Q3 report and noticed you are trying to break into enterprise accounts with a similar profile. That is why this role caught my attention. I have done that specific thing and I can do it again.

This version contains a story. It has a setup: a brief that most people thought would fail. It has a decision: pushing for it anyway and doing something specific (researching actual CFO language from earnings calls). It has a result: 23 leads, Fortune 500 companies, best campaign of the year. And then it connects that story directly to the company being applied to by referencing a real document (the Q3 report) and a specific strategic goal (breaking into enterprise accounts). The recruiter now knows what this person does, how they think, and why they are applying to this company specifically and not just to any marketing manager role.

Academic writing has its own AI slop signature, and it is distinct from the kind found in marketing content. Here the problem is not hollow cheerfulness. It is over-hedging, artificial formality, and a kind of structural parallelism that signals the content was generated rather than argued. Professors and reviewers are increasingly trained to spot it.

The AI Slop Version

The relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes in adolescents has been the subject of considerable academic inquiry in recent years. Numerous studies have explored the potential mechanisms by which prolonged engagement with social media platforms may be associated with elevated rates of anxiety, depression, and diminished self-esteem among young people. While some researchers have argued that these associations are causal in nature, others have maintained that correlation does not necessarily imply causation, and that third variables such as pre-existing psychological vulnerabilities may account for observed relationships. This paragraph contains information but no argument. It says: studies exist, there is a debate, consider both sides. That is a description of the field, not a contribution to it. The 'it is important to consider both perspectives' sentence is particularly telling: it is the kind of sentence that professors write in comments explaining why a student failed to make an argument, not the kind of sentence an argument contains. The hedge-to-claim ratio is nearly 100% hedge.

The Poorly Humanized Version

Research on social media and adolescent mental health has grown substantially over the past decade. Studies consistently report associations between high social media use and worse mental health outcomes, though debates persist about the direction of causality. Some scholars emphasize active versus passive use as a key moderating variable, while others point to content type as more predictive of harm than time spent on platforms. But the paragraph still ends with a literature gap observation so generic that it appears in nearly every literature review regardless of field. The voice belongs to no one in particular. There is no specific insight, no position taken, no reason this paragraph needed to be written by this person.

The Well-Humanized Version

The existing literature on social media and adolescent mental health contains a methodological problem that weakens nearly every finding in it: the studies that report the strongest negative associations tend to use retrospective self-report measures of screen time, which participants consistently overestimate by 40-60% compared to device-logged data (Ellis et al., 2019; Scharkow, 2016). This is not a peripheral concern. When you correct for measurement error of that magnitude, the effect sizes in several headline studies drop below conventional thresholds for clinical significance. The debate in this literature is not primarily about causality; it is about whether the signal is real at all given the instrument used to detect it.

This paragraph takes a position: the debate is being had on flawed ground. It supports that position with specific citations, a specific percentage, and a specific methodological critique (screen time overestimation). It reframes the central question of the entire field: not causality but whether the data is even valid. That is an original contribution. A reviewer reading this knows something they did not know when they started. That is what academic writing is supposed to do.

The format encouraged it: short professional observations, usually structured as lessons, usually ending with a question. A language model can produce this format in its sleep, which means most LinkedIn feeds in 2025 were mostly language models producing this format in their sleep.

The AI Slop Version

Hot take: Most people are doing networking wrong.

They focus on collecting connections instead of building relationships.

Here are 3 things I have learned about effective networking:

  1. Quality over quantity. A few strong relationships are worth more than hundreds of weak connections.

  2. Give before you take. The best networkers focus on how they can help others before asking for anything in return.

  3. Follow up consistently. Most opportunities are lost because people fail to maintain contact over time.

In 2019 I met a product leader at a conference in Toronto. We had a genuinely good conversation about why most product roadmaps are essentially organized guesswork. We kept emailing maybe four times over the next three years, always about something real, never about networking.

In 2022 she became the CPO at a company I had been trying to get into for two years. She sent me a message: 'There is a role here. I already told them about you.'

I got the job. I did not apply for it.

Every job I have gotten in the last eight years came from a conversation I had no professional agenda in. The agenda ones have gone nowhere.

I do not think this is unusual. I think we all know this and we still spend most of our networking energy on the wrong kind.

This post has everything the slop version was trying to have. It has the lesson. It has the insight. But it earns that lesson by showing a real situation first. The 2019 Toronto conference. The email thread over three years. The CPO promotion in 2022. The message. The job offer without an application. Each of those details is specific. Any of them could be checked. The reader cannot dismiss this as generic content because it is not generic. And the last paragraph lands because the four paragraphs before it built the case. The ending is opinion, not platitude. 'I think we all know this and we still spend most of our networking energy on the wrong kind' is a challenge. The AI slop version asked a question. This version made a claim.

The through-line in the good humanization column is specificity. Every dimension where genuinely good content beats the other two comes down to the same thing: it says something specific enough that it could be wrong. Claims that could be wrong carry information. Claims that cannot be wrong carry nothing.

The through-line in the poor humanization column is surface treatment. Every dimension where poor humanization improves on slop is a surface-level change: softer tone, shorter sentences, slightly warmer vocabulary. None of these changes touch the substance.
